AT A GLANCE
Uneven colour can have different causes, and the cause affects the treatment discussion. Describe the pattern, timing and any changes to a clinician before deciding that a cosmetic procedure is appropriate.
Bring the story of the colour change
Explain whether the concern followed acne, irritation, sun exposure or a previous procedure, and mention treatments you have tried. If an individual spot is changing or causing symptoms, point that out clearly rather than folding it into a general brightening request. Ask the clinician what needs assessment and whether the proposed treatment could affect pigmentation differently in your skin. Do not use a photo comparison to diagnose the cause.
Questions to bring to your consultation
Use these questions to turn your interests into a specific discussion with your doctor. Keep the proposed treatment, the reason for it and the follow-up arrangements together in your notes.
- What is the likely explanation for the pattern you have examined?
- Does any particular spot need a separate medical assessment?
- What pigment-related risks should I understand before a procedure?
Your questions
Should every dark mark be treated with the same device?
No. First establish what is being treated. Ask the doctor to explain the diagnosis or assessment and why a specific approach is appropriate before selecting a device.
