AT A GLANCE
An acne-scar consultation starts by identifying the type of change and whether acne remains active. Different scars and skin histories may call for different approaches, so avoid treating every mark as the same problem.
Bring a history of acne and healing
Tell the clinician when the marks developed, what acne treatments you have used and whether previous procedures caused pigment or healing problems. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that scar type, skin tone and active acne influence planning. Ask which finding is being targeted first and how the doctor will judge the response. A single package name does not explain the full plan.
Questions to bring to your consultation
Use these questions to turn your interests into a specific discussion with your doctor. Keep the proposed treatment, the reason for it and the follow-up arrangements together in your notes.
- Are these changes scars, colour changes, active acne or a mixture?
- Does ongoing acne need attention before scar procedures?
- How many stages are proposed and when will the response be reviewed?
Your questions
Will one procedure treat every acne mark?
There is no universal procedure for every scar or mark. Ask the doctor to identify the different findings and explain which each proposed step is intended to address.
